If you love making chili, tacos, or hearty soups, having a jar of homemade chili seasoning on hand is a total game-changer. Store-bought mixes are convenient, but they often come loaded with salt, fillers, and preservatives you just don’t need.
This bulk homemade version is clean, customizable, and budget-friendly — plus it’s free from salt and crushed red pepper, making it perfect for anyone with sensitivities. Those are optional and you can add them in to your liking! I find that for a bulk recipe, I like to leave them out so I can add salt and spiciness to specific recipes as I go.
Whats in Homemade Chili Seasoning?
This simple, flavorful mix includes:
Chili powder – the star of the show, adding warmth and color
Cumin – gives that earthy, savory backbone
Smoked paprika – adds a hint of smokiness without heat
Oregano – for a mild herbal note
Black pepperÂ
Garlic powder
Onion Powder
No salt. Just pure, clean spice that tastes incredible in everything from chili to taco meat, casseroles, and even roasted veggies.

Storage
Keep this blend in a sealed glass jar away from direct sunlight. It stays fresh for up to 6 months to a year, but once you start using it, it probably won’t last that long!
Try it in:
Classic chili
Taco meat
Soups and stews
Roasted potatoes or vegetables
Marinades and dry rubs

Why Make Your Own Chili Seasoning?
If I were to replace this recipe with packets from the store, it would be about $80. There is usually about 1 tablespoon per packet. This recipe makes a little more than 2 cups which is about 32 tablespoons.
When you make your own blend, you control the flavor. No mystery ingredients, no extra sodium, and no running out mid-recipe. This mix brings that perfect balance of warm spice, smokiness, and depth that makes a pot of chili irresistible.
Making it in bulk means you’ll always have it ready — and it’s great for meal prepping, gifting, or even adding to your pantry staples lineup.
